Clare College has just received the Platinum award in the 2022-23 Green Impact Awards from Cambridge University.

This is now the ninth year in succession that Clare has won Gold or Platinum – the strongest run of any college.

Green Impact is the University's environmental accreditation scheme. It supports and encourages departments and Colleges across the University in reducing their environmental impacts.

At Clare we work hard to be one of the greenest College's in Cambridge. Our Environment Committee meets once a term and our focus this year has been on the following:

  • Reducing ruminant meats from our menus for students, Fellows and staff as well as for our commercial activities.
  • Introducing a new, lower-price “Green-licence” for students who don’t need to occupy their rooms during vacations. Students needing to stay in College over vacation periods will be housed nearer to one another while the heating in other rooms can be cut to a minimum.
  • Reducing energy usage through a staircase competition encouraging students to switch off appliances when not in use.
  • Investigation of heat pumps as alternative energy sources.
  • Extension of unmown lawn areas to encourage biodiversity.
  • Planning a new planting scheme that includes drought tolerant hardy perennials.
