Paul Cartledge, Emeritus Professor of Greek Culture at the University of Cambridge and the A. G. Leventis Senior Research Fellow at Clare, delivered the inaugural George Cawkwell Memorial Lecture at the Ioannou Centre in Oxford earlier this month. The lecture was held in memory of George Cawkwell (1919-2019), a prominent figure at the University College, Oxford and an expert in the field of Ancient History.

Professor Cartledge was the Harold Salvesen Junior Research Fellow at University College, Oxford from 1970-72. The lecture explored Sparta’s role in Western civilisation and whether contemporary American and European xenophobia has roots in ancient Spartan attitudes.
