Collin Smith

Biography
Collin is a chemical engineer whose research focuses on electrification of the chemical industry with renewable energy through the design and optimization of novel chemical processes that accommodate the time-variability and geographic distribution of solar/wind energy. In particular, he specializes in the development of "green" ammonia production from water, air and electricity, in contrast to current "brown" ammonia production from fossil-fuels which generates 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions to produce vital fertilizers. Sustainably transitioning ammonia production will enable the storage and transport of renewable energy in the dense chemical bonds of ammonia, creating robust and carbon-free energy systems.
Before joining Clare College as a Junior Research Fellow in Oct 2024, he received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, and his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in the US.
